About the Project Bacterial infections pose major health challenges for humans and animals worldwide. The treatment of many such infections is becoming increasingly difficult due to the rise of antibiotic resistance. As a result, the development of prophylactic vaccines against these pathogens are urgently needed.

About the Project At any point, only a small fraction of the genome is active. Much of the genome, need to be silenced at all times. MORC proteins are epigenetic repressors that have repress transposable elements in animals and compact heterochromatin regions in plants. However how they exert their repressive mechanisms is unclear. In this project, MORC proteins from different species will be purified and studied using biochemical and biophysical assays.

About the Project Tropical beaches are among the world’s most heavily used and impacted coastal environments and underpin a major tourism industry across Southeast Asia. Despite their ecological and economic importance, their microbial biodiversity and ecosystem functions remain poorly understood compared with other coastal habitats such as mangroves, salt marshes, and rocky shores.

About the Project Morphogenesis is ultimately a biomechanical process, where cells and biomaterials are molded into functional shapes by biomechanical forces. Plant cell morphogenesis is modulated by the intracellular hydrostatic pressure, or “turgor pressure”, and the resulting cell wall tension, leading to many biophysicists comparing plant cells to “water-filled balloons”.

About the Project Artificial intelligence is transforming how machines see and interpret the world, yet most AI systems remain fundamentally electronic: light is first captured, digitised, and only then processed by computational hardware. This project asks a different question: can light itself become the computing medium?

About the Project Most modern systems are realized through circuits. Inside these systems, printed circuit boards (PCBs) interconnect and control various functional components. To achieve greater miniaturization and higher performance, these discrete components must be integrated into a single integrated circuit (IC), composed of millions of transistors.

About the Project Optically Pumped Magnetometers (OPMs) are rapidly emerging as one of the most promising quantum sensing technologies for detecting ultra-weak magnetic fields with femtotesla-level sensitivity. OPM arrays have the potential to enable compact and wearable biomagnetic imaging systems, non-invasive medical diagnostics, magnetic source localization, and high-resolution non-destructive evaluation (NDE) of materials and devices.

About the Project This project focuses on advancing mid-infrared (MIR) and/or Terahertz integrated photonics by developing heterogeneously integrated semiconductor lasers directly on CMOS compatible chips, such as silicon. The mid-infrared (MIR) spectral region (2–10 µm) and Terahertz (THz, 30–300 µm) are crucial for chemical sensing, environmental monitoring, and free-space communications, but traditional MIR and THz systems rely on bulky, power-hungry components.

About the Project The project will explore the use of novel materials and processes such as phase transitions in post-CMOS devices. Especially, the project will explore how such devices can be made to behave like neurons, and possibly solve problems that are considered too difficult for today's digital computers. We welcome direct PhD applications (with a bachelor's degree).

About the Project The advent of large AI models has worsened the long-standing von Neumann bottleneck issue. A high-speed, high-density embedded memory may provide a possible solution by enabling the entire AI model to be stored on-chip, thus reducing the reliance on external memory. However, such a memory technology is still elusive to-date. The main objective of this PhD research project is to realize such a technology through deploying novel material platforms.
