About the Project Cystinosis is a rare condition caused by mutations in the CTNS gene. This leads to cystine build-up in cells which damages many organs, especially the kidneys. The current treatment, cysteamine, slows the disease but many patients still develop serious complications. This project aims to develop a new, one-time gene therapy that provides a lasting treatment for cystinosis, by integrating a healthy copy of the CTNS gene into cells.

About the Project Liver disease is leading cause of mortality in working age and a major cause of working life years lost. It disproportionately impacts patients with people in underserved communities. About the Project Neutrophils represent a major arm of the innate immune defence system, with a long- held view of them being transcriptionally inactive, fast responders, mobilised in response to microbial and tissue insults. Recent developments in the field have changed this perception and firmly positioned neutrophils as transcriptionally active cells with the ability to adapt their transcriptional program.

About the Project Fungi have beneficial but also detrimental properties. They are used for the production of foodstuffs and valuable pharmaceuticals and enzymes. However, they can also cause devastating plant and animal diseases. The PhD project has the overall theme of exploiting knowledge of fungal sexual reproduction to lead to improved food quality/security and better understanding and management of fungal disease.

About the Project Details of the Project An association between assisted reproductive technologies (ART) and an increased risk of congenital imprinting disorders was first described more than 20 years ago but the causes of the association have not been resolved. Recent research that ART not only predisposes to some imprinting disorders but also to multilocus imprinting disturbance (MLID).

About the Project Pulmonary hypertension (PAH) is debilitating condition characterized by thick and stiff blood vessels that are unable to expand resulting in an increased pressure in the blood vessels supplying the lungs. This makes the heart work harder making it weak and can lead to heart failure. Changes in the functioning of some genes increase the risk of PAH. Currently there is no cure for this condition.

About the Project According to the central dogma of molecular biology, genetic information flows from DNA to RNA to protein in a precise and regulated manner. However, this process is far from perfect. We now understand that transcription—the conversion of DNA information into RNA—is inherently noisy , particularly in complex organisms such as humans.
