AHRC Doctoral Landscape Awards are open to International applicants (including EU and non-EU candidates who do not meet UK residency criteria). Please note that the AHRC grant covers the UK (Home) tuition fee rate only.
International candidates are required to meet the difference between the Home and International fee rates from personal funds or alternative external sources. The University of York is unable to cover this fee gap, and in accordance with UKRI regulations, Training Grant funds cannot be used to bridge the difference between Home and International tuition fee rates.
Further details regarding current tuition fee rates and stipend allowances can be found via UKRI - Support for UKRI-funded students.

Open to International (including EU), International (non-EU) and UK (home) students.
Open to students whose research falls within the remit of the AHRC (as defined by UKRI).
To be eligible for an AHRC Landscape Award, a student must:
Students who have already commenced their doctoral study (i.e. current doctoral students) are not eligible for studentship awards through either Focal or Landscape Awards.
Successful students may undertake their study full-time or part-time. No distinction is made during the selection process.
Full-time AHRC DLA award holders are expected to dedicate themselves fully to their doctoral research. While candidates may hold full-time employment at the point of application, they cannot be in full-time employment when the award commences. However, students may undertake part-time paid work, such as graduate teaching or demonstration, provided it does not exceed an average of 6 hours per week and has the approval of their main supervisor.
Application deadline: Wednesday 20 January 2027, 5pm GMT
Applicants are reminded that they are only eligible for this scheme after they have been offered a place for their PHD for the September 2027 intake (earlier enrolment is not eligible) and are therefore advised to submit their application for a PhD by the beginning of December. That will allow time for interview for the PhD place and for feedback on the application for AHRC Landscape Funding (academic units may offer different types of support for the application process for the AHRC Landscape Funding).
You can download a PDF version of the application form if you'd like to review the questions before submitting your application: AHRC DLA Application Form 20272028.pdf (PDF , 234kb)
Please note that you must submit your application using our online form .
It is possible to edit your form responses after submission - you will be given this option following confirmation of form submission. This option will be removed following the closing date.
Each department or unit will rank their candidates and nominate the best applicants to a scholarship panel organised by the Faculty of the Arts and Humanities that will then rank the complete group of candidates. The process will be completed by the end of March, and candidates will be contacted directly.
