Extensions of Time

If you need to extend your studies beyond your current submission deadline, you must apply for an Extension of Time via the Change Requests section of the PhD Manager system.

Please note that when you have completed your normal period of registration, all researchers are attributed a status of 'writing up' and are neither full-time nor part-time.

The first Extension of Time after your main period of registration is for a fixed period of 6 months and is free of charge. Any subsequent Extension of Time are for fixed periods of 6 months and will incur a fee (please see below). You can submit at any time within that fixed period.

Extension of Time | Duration | Fee

First Extension of Time | 6 months | Free

Subsequent Extensions of Time | 6 months | £725

Fees are correct at time of posting. Please refer to the miscellaneous fees section for the most up-to-date information.

Before submitting any subsequent Extension of Time request, researchers are required to hold a Review of Progress Against Deadline (ROPAD) meeting with their supervisor/s and Postgraduate Tutor or Research Director. This is to consider what progress is being made, to ascertain whether further extensions are in the best interest of the researcher, and to establish a timeline for submission. Notes of the ROPAD meeting must be recorded on PhD Manager. When the ROPAD meeting note has been approved, a candidate should submit an Extension of Time request for approval.
