About the project

The third year of the PhD (or part-time equivalent) is normally devoted to drafting and re- drafting the chapters. A complete draft of the thesis is required by the end of year three. For doctoral researchers on the +4 pathway this requirement takes place during the fourth year of full-time enrolment (or part-time equivalent).

Subject to satisfactory progress and completion of a draft thesis by the end of year three (or part-time equivalent) doctoral researchers may apply for a maximum of three terms on Extension of Writing-up (Continuation) status which enables you to have a discounted tuition fee for the term/s your application has been approved for. For those on the +4 pathway Extension of Writing-up (Continuation) status would be considered at the end of the fourth year of full-time enrolment. For MPhil candidates a completed draft thesis and transfer to Extension of Writing up (Continuation) status is required by the end of year two (or part-time equivalent).

Please review whether you meet the eligibility requirements set out below transfer to Extension of Writing up (Continuation) status and if so, log in to PhD Manager and ensure that you and your supervisor complete the application via ‘Change Requests - Extension to Writing-Up’.

Requirements

  • Have completed the School’s required period of registration (normally a minimum of three years full-time study or six years part-time study for a PhD)
  • Have paid the appropriate tuition fees
  • Have been transferred from MPhil to PhD registration (if a PhD award is being sought)
  • Not have exceeded your total period of registration (48 months full-time or 84 months part-time equivalent)
  • Have completed a draft thesis and will submit within the prescribed school deadline. A draft thesis should be submitted to the supervisory committee at least two to three weeks prior to the listed deadlines below so that sufficient time is given to the committee to review the draft and complete this application. Supervisors should confirm with the student the exact date for the submission of the draft thesis.
  • Are confirmed as academically eligible for Extension of Writing-Up/ Continuation status by their Supervisory Committee
  • Completed an Annual Progression Overview for the prior academic year

Relevant deadlines

Extension of Writing-Up/Continuation status is normally permitted for either a maximum of three terms or until the prescribed School deadline for submission of the thesis for examination (whichever is sooner) . If this status is not applied for or applicable, it is not rolled over and will be lost and your fee status continuing on a full-time/part time basis, unless there have been approved Interruptions of Study.

  • 1 August for moving to Extension to Writing up/Continuation from Term 1 onward
  • 1 November for moving to Extension to Writing up/Continuation from Term 2 onward
  • 1 March for moving to Extension to Writing up/Continuation for Term 3 onward
