About the project

Our department has an exemplary track record supporting successful fellowship applications, including British Academy, Wellcome Trust and Marie Skłodowska-Curie.

In the last ten years we have hosted more than 50 prestigious fellowships by backing innovative research projects.

Expressions of interest for the Leverhulme Early Career Scheme are now closed.

The fellowships we offer fall into four categories:

There are number of research centres that offer unique opportunities for collaboration including Biology , Chemistry , Computer Science , History and the School of Arts and Creative Technologies:

  • Early career: these schemes can vary but usually this is within the first few years post PhD. There is often mentorship from a senior member of academic staff at the host institution.
  • Mid career: once you've been research active for a number of years and you wish to pursue research exclusively for a period of time by obtaining funds for teaching buy-out.
  • Independent fellowships: when you're ready to become an independent researcher and build your profile in a particular area.
  • Established/late career: for established researchers building capacity in a particularly strategic area or expanding an area of existing work.
  • BioArch
  • York Experimental Archaeological Research (YEAR) Centre
  • Digital Archaeology and Heritage (DAH) Lab

Before submitting an expression of interest for a fellowship, you should make contact with a member of our academic staff directly to discuss your proposed research and how it aligns with existing research at York. Please contact with us as soon as possible as there is often a longer lead in for more complex schemes such as the Future Leaders Fellowship scheme.

To submit an expression of interest for a fellowship scheme please email artshum-preaward-support@york.ac.uk at least six months in advance of the deadline with the following documentation:

  • An up-to-date CV, including a full publication list
  • Details of the fellowship scheme you would like to apply to
  • A draft research proposal, no longer than two A4 pages
  • A short statement setting out your reasons for wanting to carry out your research at York (and, if relevant to the fellowship scheme, details of the staff member you would like to act as your mentor/supervisor.)
