About the project

About the Project About the Project This project aims to significantly advance the theoretical understanding of heat and momentum transport in turbulent flows, a crucial step for improving power plants and reducing CO2 emissions. The core of the project is the asymptotic analysis of a novel class of exact coherent structures (solutions of the Navier–Stokes equations), which provides fresh insights into the mechanisms governing turbulent transport. These insights will enable the development of accurate and efficient transport prediction models that do not rely on experimental or simulation data. The computational tools developed through the project will facilitate optimal engineering design and support the creation of sustainable, energy-efficient technologies. ROLE DESCRIPTION The PhD student will work closely with Dr Kengo Deguchi [ kengo.deguchi@monash.edu ]. We will consider simple canonical systems, such as Rayleigh Benard, Couette, and/or Poiseuille flows with suitable modifications, and investigate their behaviour in detail using theoretical analysis. The PhD project will focus on: Computation of exact coherent structures and development of the relavant codes Interpretation of the numerical results using asymptotic analysis and dynamical systems theory Literature review and preparation of research publications Essential Criteria A First‑class (H1 or equivalent) bachelor’s or master’s degree in mathematics, physics, engineering, or a related discipline. Strong interest in theoretical and numerical fluid mechanics. For candidates from countries where English is not the sole official language, proof of English proficiency meeting Monash University requirements is essential. Expected Start Date The PhD student is expected to start between 1 February 2027 and 1 August 2027. Further Information Interested candidates should email Dr Kengo Deguchi with the following documents combined into a single PDF file: 1. A cover letter (maximum 1 page) describing your background, research interests and how you meet the essential criteria. Please indicate when you would be able to commence the project. Applications that do not explicitly address the selection criteria will not be considered. 2. Academic transcripts (translated into English if required), including grading scale information. 3. A brief CV, with a list of referees from whom recommendation letters may be requested. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to discuss the position via Zoom.
