About the project
About the Project Join the University of Manchester’s Accelerator Physics Group and help shape the future of compact X-ray and gamma-ray technology. This exciting PhD project explores how powerful lasers interacting with plasma can generate ultra-fast, high-energy light, opening new possibilities for imaging in science, medicine, and industry. You will use advanced computer simulations to investigate and optimise novel X-ray generation techniques, comparing their performance and stability to guide the design of next-generation sources. The project offers opportunities to collaborate with, and potentially test your work at, leading UK research facilities including ELI across Europe and EPAC at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, UK. As a member of the Cockcroft Institute, you will work within a national network of accelerator scientists and benefit from specialist training, collaboration, and access to world-class research infrastructure. Training and Development As part of this PhD, you will: • Gain in-depth experience in computational and theoretical plasma physics. • Develop expertise in high-performance computing and advanced simulation tools. • Work as part of the Cockcroft Institute, collaborating with leading UK universities, national laboratories, and international partners. • Receive training in research methods, data analysis, and scientific communication. • Participate in seminars, workshops, and networking opportunities across the UK accelerator physics community. About the Research Environment The Accelerator Physics Group at the University of Manchester is internationally recognised for its pioneering work in laser–plasma acceleration, advanced radiation sources, and beam dynamics. The Department of Physics and Astronomy is one of the UK’s largest and most active physics departments, providing an outstanding environment for postgraduate research. This project is expected to start in September 2027. Before you apply: We strongly recommend that you contact the supervisors for this project before you apply. How to apply: To be considered for this project you must complete a formal application through our online application portal. If you already have an applicant account this link will directly open an application for PhD School of Natural Sciences Scholarships . If you don’t already have an applicant account, please follow the instructions here . When applying, please specify the full title and supervisor/s of the project, details of your previous study, and names and contact details of two referees. You must also upload a Supporting Statement describing your motivation to apply to the project, your CV and transcripts of awarded and in-progress university qualifications .
