About the project

About the Project This PhD project will develop quantum technology to prepare and study radioactive molecules for searches of physics beyond the standard model. Molecular structure offers a unique and extreme high field (GV/cm-1) laboratory that can amplify effects associated with parity violation and time-reversal violations. This makes them excellent tools to address fundamental questions on the constituents of our universe, such as the asymmetry in the abundance of matter and antimatter and the observationally inferred existence of dark matter. This project will use radioactive molecules constructed using pear shaped nuclei. These systems are predicted to have more than four orders of magnitude greater sensitivity than the current generation of stable molecular probes. One key goal of the project is to produce cold radioactive molecules in sufficient numbers for precision spectroscopy. By preparing and detecting molecular states using quantum sensing techniques it is possible to achieve both high sensitivity and precision. This project would use quantum-logic schemes, which are a technology currently utilised to produce the most precise atomic clocks. The project will be based in the Photon Science Institute and will utilise a suite of high-resolution lasers to perform spectroscopy on actinide molecules. It will develop new quantum optics tools to produce cold radioactive molecules to perform competitive precision measurement to probe time and parity violation. The project provide training in quantum optics, molecular spectroscopy, cryogenics and ion trapping methods This project is expected to start in September 2027.
