About the project

About the Project Doctoral study program: Biomedical Sciences Doctoral study specialization: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Form: doctoral present Department: Department of Biology, Faculty of Medicine MU Supervisor: Dr. Nicola Silva, Ph.D. Ph.D. position: Identification and functional characterization of post translational-mediated controls acting during meiosis in C. elegans Annotation: Meiosis is essential to generate functional gametes so to ensure perpetuation of species. Many processes take place during germ cells maturation in order to produce oocyte and sperm, including chromosome synapsis and DNA recombination, which allow establishment of crossovers and thus promote faithful chromosome segregation in the daughter cells. We use the metazoan model Caenorhabditis elegans, that provides as a powerful yet simple organism to study different aspects of chromosome dynamics in the germ line. We are particularly interested in identifying and characterizing novel proteins involved in promoting genome stability, as well as determine the functional requirements imposed by post-translational modifications in supporting chromosome segregation during meiosis. Requirements: Strong skills in molecular biology, cytological analyses and biochemistry are highly desirable. Curiosity and, a zest for knowledge and strong commitment are essential requirements. Strong communication and organization skills are also necessary. Funding of the study and research for 4 years: Czech Science Foundation (GA26-20768S), institutional funding. Requirements for the student according to the Doctoral Board (publication activity, teaching assistance, other requirements): The student's minimum publication activity within the course of study is one first-author publication with an IF value above the median in the field or 2 first-author publications in journals with an IF value in the 3rd quartile in the field (Q3). A condition for successful completion of the studies is also a foreign internship of at least 1 month, which is an inseparable part of the studies. As part of their studies, students will also participate in the teaching. Information about supervisor: Publication activity over the past 5 years has been included in the supervisor CV. Several international collaborations are ongoing in the lab, providing multiple possibilities for the potential PhD student to perform internship abroad. One 3rd-year PhD student is currently present in the lab. Information about PhD program in Biomedical Sciences: Comprehensive information about the PhD Programme in Biomedical Sciences is available on the programme’s website, including detailed guidance on how to apply and an overview of the admissions process.
