Investigation of human cytomegalovirus modulation of gamma delta Tcells

About the Project Summary Immune cells are important for the control of viral infections. In particular, innate cytotoxic lymphocytes such as gamma delta T-cells and natural killer (NK) are able to sense healthy tissue and kill tumour and viral-infected cells. This process is controlled by cues they receive from protein receptors on their cell surface that either provide activating or inhibitory signals telling them to leave healthy cells alone or kill virus-infected cells they encounter. This project will investigate how an important human pathogen, human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), modulates the activation of enigmatic gamma delta T-cells and the impact on the control of HCMV-mediated disease. Academic criteria: Applicants for a studentship must have obtained, or be about to obtain, a first or upper second-class UK honours degree, or the equivalent qualification gained outside the UK.
