About the project

About the Project Summary Cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD) is a major cause of stroke and vascular cognitive impairment, yet the molecular mechanisms underlying disease remain poorly understood. This project will use patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) models to investigate whether different genetic and sporadic forms of cSVD converge on common vascular mechanisms. The student will compare vascular cell phenotypes across disease models of the neurovascular unit using cellular, molecular and functional approaches. Transcriptomic approach will be used to identify shared disease-associated pathways, followed by targeted perturbation of candidate mechanisms to establish their functional relevance. Candidate pathways will subsequently be evaluated as potential therapeutic targets using pharmacological or genetic approaches. Project Aims The project will provide multidisciplinary training in iPSC disease modelling, molecular biology, functional assays and omics-based approaches, with the opportunity to translate mechanistic findings towards therapeutic development.
