About the project

About the Project Breast cancer metastasis to the bone represents a critical, incurable clinical challenge characterised by severe tumour growth and immune evasion. Traditional treatments often fail in the "cold," severely low- oxygen (hypoxic) bone niche. This exciting project introduces a pioneering approach to tackling bone metastases: oncolytic virotherapy. We seek to develop a deep understanding of how these therapeutic viruses behave within the bone microenvironment and its distinct cellular compartments. We hypothesise that oncolytic vaccinia possesses superior cancer-killing capabilities within the bone niche due to its unique innate ability to survive and replicate within hypoxic environments. Our aim is to investigate these interactions in precise detail, examining how the virus engages with key cellular compartments to facilitate tumour destruction and ultimately reshape the bone metastatic landscape. To address these aims, you will receive comprehensive training in advanced in vitro, ex vivo (NAMs), and in vivo disease models, alongside multi-colour flow cytometry, advanced microscopy, and digital image analysis techniques. By taking on this project, you will be joining the VIBE Group, a highly supportive, high-energy research team breaking boundaries between bioinspired therapies and nanotechnology. Surrounded by four major hospitals, our team works in close, daily collaboration with leading clinicians to ensure our science directly impacts patients. Furthermore, because our supervisory team has a proven track record of successfully translating research into commercial spin-out companies, this role offers a career-boosting opportunity to gain first-hand commercialisation experience alongside your PhD. This project is most suitable for those with an interest in oncology / immune cell biology / virology. Training in all key areas will be provided but the successful candidate would be able to evidence previous research experience (e.g. via final year or masters-level wet lab projects or a role as a research assistant / technician).
