About the project

About the Project Robotic welding and Wire+Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) of heavy steel components for the nuclear and maritime sector, hosted at the Maritime Supply Chain Innovation Centre. Proposed Lead Supervisor: Michael Ward Institution: UoStrathclyde Institution: TBC Industrial Partner: Malin Group (Confirmed) Industrial funding: Confirmed Proposed Project Start Date: TBC Advert Close Date: ASAP Target Background for student: Electrical, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science Project Summary: Malin Group have been pivotal in establishing the Maritime Supply Chain Innovation Centre (MSCIC) at the Scottish Marine Technology Park in West Dunbartonshire through the Glasgow City Region Investment Zone programme. EngD seeks to rapidly explore automated robotic manufacturing approaches such as robotic welding and Wire+Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) of heavy steel components for the nuclear and maritime sector. Project Aims and Objectives: Assess feasibility of undertaking large-scale robotic manufacture of heavy steel components for the nuclear and maritime sector. Understand key structural integrity, material supply, business drivers and safety aspects related to the manufacture of heavy steel components for the nuclear and maritime sector. Explore the automated manufacture of heavy steel components for the nuclear and maritime sector. Verify the performance of the final build using mechanical and non-destructive testing (NDT) approaches. Optimise the automated build of these heavy steel components for the nuclear and maritime sector based on Objective 4. Alignment to STAND-UP Target Impact Outcomes 50% in overall build or decommissioning process time, through digital tools, automation, new processes, monitoring and control strategies 40% in maintenance time, through new materials, robotics, smart sensors, inspection during service and digital data analytics Apply for this project Contact the lead supervisor or programme team to discuss your interest.
