About the project
About the Project Are you passionate about robotics, artificial intelligence, and shaping the future of autonomous systems? This PhD opportunity offers the chance to contribute to the development of next-generation robotic technologies inspired by the remarkable adaptability, intelligence, and decision-making capabilities of humans. As robotic systems become increasingly integrated into society, enabling them to operate safely, autonomously, and effectively in dynamic and uncertain environments remains one of the most significant challenges in modern engineering. Whether deployed in healthcare, manufacturing, assistive technologies, human performance, or emerging industrial applications, future robotic systems must be capable of perceiving, learning, adapting, and making intelligent decisions in real time. This research will explore novel approaches to human-inspired cognitive control, combining robotics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, sensing, and computational modelling to develop autonomous robotic systems capable of interacting intelligently with their environment. The project will investigate how principles derived from human cognition, perception, and motor control can be translated into robotic intelligence, enabling more adaptive, resilient, and efficient robotic behaviour. As a PhD candidate, you will: - You will start with foundational theory. - Design and develop innovative robotic technologies inspired by human intelligence and behaviour. - Explore how artificial intelligence can enable robots to learn, adapt, and operate more effectively in dynamic environments. - Contribute to cutting-edge research at the intersection of robotics, AI, and autonomous systems. - Develop valuable skills in robotics, machine learning, intelligent systems, programming, and emerging technologies. - Contribute to the development of transformative technologies with applications across healthcare, industry, assistive technologies, sports performance, and beyond. This interdisciplinary research provides an exciting opportunity in the Loughborough University Intelligent Automation Centre to address fundamental scientific and engineering challenges while contributing to technologies that could redefine the future of autonomous systems. The successful candidate will work at the intersection of robotics, artificial intelligence, and human-inspired design, helping to bridge the gap between biological intelligence and robotic autonomy. We are seeking highly motivated candidates with strong analytical and problem-solving skills, a background in engineering, computer science, robotics, or related disciplines, and a passion for innovation. Experience in programming, machine learning, control systems, robotics, artificial intelligence, or computational modelling will be advantageous. Join us in advancing the next generation of intelligent autonomous robotic systems and help shape the future of human-inspired robotics. The School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering has seen 100% of its research impact rated as 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent' (REF, 2029).
