About the project
About the Project Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a radiolucent and biocompatible polymer that has been proposed as an alternative to titanium for the fabrication of maxillofacial implants. PEEK has several favourable properties, including low density, good biocompatibility, bone-like elastic modulus, high thermal and chemical stability, and favourable aesthetic characteristics. However, PEEK is bioinert and lacks osteoconductive properties, which may limit its integration with surrounding bone tissue. Therefore, surface functionalisation of PEEK is desirable to enhance its biological performance and overcome these limitations. In addition, recent advances in 3D printing technologies enable the fabrication of patient-specific PEEK implants tailored to individual anatomical and clinical requirements. This study aims to develop 3D-printed functionalized PEEK for maxillofacial applications. First, different 3D printing technologies and parameters will be investigated to define the best manufacturing process, through chemical, physical and mechanical analyses. Then, different surface modification techniques and materials will be developed aiming to enhance the biological performance. Candidates are expected to hold (or be about to obtain) a minimum 2:1 Bachelors Degree with Honours (or equivalent) in a related area/subject. Candidates with experience in biomechanical tests and 3D printing, or with an interest in dental biomaterials are encouraged to apply. Eligibility Applicants must have obtained or be about to obtain a minimum Upper Second class UK honours degree, or the equivalent qualifications gained outside the UK, in a relevant discipline.
