About the project

About the Project AI for the Future of Computer Graphics Computer graphics is increasingly being transformed by Artificial Intelligence. This PhD project will explore how AI can make the creation of realistic digital content faster, more efficient, and more accessible, with a particular focus on neural rendering and AI-driven material generation. The project sits at the intersection of Computer Graphics and Artificial Intelligence, combining expertise in both areas. The successful PhD student will investigate how modern machine learning and neural techniques can be used to automate and accelerate challenging graphics tasks, such as creating realistic materials and digital assets. A particular focus will be on complex materials such as marble, cloth, hair, and other surfaces whose appearance is difficult to reproduce using traditional computer graphics techniques. The student will explore how AI can learn the visual and physical characteristics of such materials and generate realistic results efficiently across different scenes, lighting conditions, and viewpoints. The research will combine computer graphics, machine learning, deep learning, and neural rendering, with opportunities to investigate emerging AI techniques and develop new methods for graphics production. The work will also be evaluated using realistic, industry-relevant assets and challenges through a collaboration with Weta FX, a world-leading visual effects company. The student will receive interdisciplinary supervision and training in both AI and computer graphics, as well as opportunities to engage with industry experts and gain practical experience through an offered internship with Weta FX. This project is ideal for candidates interested in the intersection of AI, computer graphics, visual effects, and generative technologies, and who want to develop techniques that could contribute to the next generation of digital content creation and visual effects. This project is expected to start in September 2027. Before you apply: We strongly recommend that you contact the supervisors for this project before you apply.
