About the project

About the Project This project is about solid-state quantum technologies, and aims to demonstrate key components of photonic quantum processing circuits. The platform that will be used is a III-V semiconductor quantum dot embedded within a photonic waveguide. In the ideal scenario, this system behaves in the one-dimensional atom limit, in which the quantum dot can be used to impart a large phase shift to the photon. Depending on the position of the quantum dot, the phase shift can be linked to the spin of the electrons in the dot, form the basic building block of a spin-photon quantum network. Alternatively, the large nonlinearity at the single-photon level can be harnessed to develop deterministic network components that overcome the scaling problem of current systems. This work is highly timely as it fits to the goals of the national Quantum technology programme.
